Dangerous Liaisons -

Dangerous Liaisons is a 1988 historical drama based upon the 18th century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses  by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The film is based on a cruel bet between two wealthy individuals who are both part of high society, Marquise de Merteuil and her former lover Victim de Valmont. She challenges Valmont to try and seduce a young virginal girl before she is due to marry, however he offers a more challenging one by being able to also seduce Madame de Tourvel who is married and has very moral and religious beliefs. Throughout the film Valmont starts to feel guilty and he realises he has true feelings for Tourvel whilst Marquise de Merteuil becomes even more wicked.

What I liked about this film was the use of costume, it really helped me understand how 18th century clothing was worn, and how it differed between social classes. It also helped me realise how important the use of makeup and wigs were especially to the women, as it allowed them to portray themselves as individuals whilst still acting in the correct manner . Personally I also felt like both the extravagant clothing and makeup acted as a mask allowing the women of this period to hide their true selves behind, whilst allowing the outside world to see the type of women they were expected to be and act like.
